A consensus view that sees society as being essentially harmonious.
What do functionalists argue?
Society has basic needs, including the need for social order.
Social institutions such as education perform positive functions for society as a whole by socialising new members.

What does Durkheim (1903) say about education?
It promotes social solidarity.
Education prepares young people for work. (specialised division of labour)
What does Parsons (1961) say about school?
It is the focal socialising agency of modern society.
It helps to build a meritocratic society,
It’s a miniature version of wider society.
What do David and Moore say about education?
Its main function is role allocation - the selection and allocation of individuals to their future work roles.
What do Marxists say about the functionalist view on education?
Values transmitted by education are not society’s shared values, but rather those of the ruling class.
