What are Personality Disorders?
Mental disorders categorized by enduring maladaptive patterns of behavior, cognition, and inner experience across a variety of contexts that deviate markedly from the individual’s culture.
What are the three clusters of Personality Disorders?
Cluster A: Paranoid, Schizoid, Schizotypal; Cluster B: Antisocial, Borderline, Histrionic, Narcissistic; Cluster C: Avoidant, Dependent, Obsessive-Compulsive.
What is the lifetime prevalence of Personality Disorders?
5% overall lifetime prevalence. Rates decrease with age.
What are the symptoms of Paranoid Personality Disorder?
Pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of others such that their motives are interpreted as malevolent. Symptoms include hypersensitivity, reduced capacity for emotional involvement, social withdrawal, and bearing grudges.
What are the symptoms of Schizoid Personality Disorder?
Lack of interest in social relationships, tendency towards a solitary lifestyle, secretiveness, emotional coldness, and apathy. Symptoms include detachment, indifference to praise or criticism, and solitary activities.
What are the symptoms of Schizotypal Personality Disorder?
Severe social anxiety, paranoia, unconventional beliefs, extreme discomfort in maintaining close relationships. Symptoms include magical thinking, paranoid ideation, eccentric behavior, and social anxiety.
What are the symptoms of Borderline Personality Disorder?
Long-term pattern of abnormal behavior characterized by unstable relationships, unstable sense of self, and unstable emotions. Symptoms include impulsivity, mood swings, paranoia, and feelings of emptiness.
What are the symptoms of Histrionic Personality Disorder?
Pattern of excessive attention-seeking emotions, inappropriately seductive behavior, and excessive need for approval. Symptoms include provocative behavior, rapid emotional shifts, and exaggerated emotions.
What are the symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder?
Long-term pattern of abnormal behavior characterized by exaggerated feelings of self-importance, need for admiration, and lack of empathy. Symptoms include grandiosity, arrogance, and lack of empathy.
What are the symptoms of Antisocial Personality Disorder?
Pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others. Symptoms include failure to conform to social norms, deceitfulness, reckless disregard for safety, and lack of remorse.
What are the symptoms of Avoidant Personality Disorder?
Pervasive pattern of social inhibition, feelings of inadequacy, and hypersensitivity to negative evaluation. Symptoms include social isolation, shyness, hypersensitivity to criticism, and mistrust.
What are the symptoms of Dependent Personality Disorder?
Pervasive and excessive need to be taken care of, leading to submissive and clinging behavior. Symptoms include difficulty making decisions, fear of abandonment, and seeking excessive reassurance.
What are the symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder?
Pervasive pattern of preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and control at the expense of flexibility and efficiency. Symptoms include hoarding, attention to minor details, and inflexibility.
