Personality Flashcards
To understand key knowledge around theories of personality - what it is, how it is formed and which behaviours result?
What is personality?
Sum total of an individuals characteristics which makes a human unique
What are the three main perspectives on personality?
(what are the formulas for behaviour)
Trait perspective b=p
Social Learning perspective b=e
Interactionist Perspective b=f (p,e)
What are the main arguments of the trait perspective of personality ?
Personlaity is innate / genetic
Personality is stable and enduring
Personality can predict behaviour
What 4 personality ‘types did Eysenck’s trait theory identify?
Stable Extrovert
Stable Introvert
Neurotic Extrovert
Neurotic Introvert
Stable - predicatable, dependable, solid, not so prone to stress
Neurotic - up and down, prone to mood swings, susceptible to stress
Extrovert - outgoing, lively, loud, life and soul of the party. confident, likes to work in teams, good communicator
Introvert - quiet, shy, reserved, likes to perform alone
Girdano suggested an alternative trait theory called the ‘narrow band approach’. He suggested two types of personality. What were they and can you identify 3 characteristics of each?
TYPE A Aggressive, Ambitious, Driven, Takes risks, Prone to stress, can become anxious
TYPE B Laid back, relaxed, calm, good under pressure, not prone to stress
There are arguments for both being effective sports p[eople. Can you give examples?
How does Social Learning theory suggest that our personality is formed ?
We learn through the environment
From role models and significant others
Through copying and imitating these role models
Trhough reinforcement, praise and punishment (conditioning) based on our actions and behaviours
What is socialisation?
The process by which we adopt the norms and cultures of a social group
What does the INTERACTIONIST perspective of personality suggest?
That behaviour is a function of both the person and the environment b=f(p,e)
ie. both the environment and our traits affect how we behave
What is personality profiling?
A method of identifying our personality traits and then suggesting our sporting preferences, affect on performance, likelihood of success.
Questionaires, psycho-metric tests and observation could be used to profile the athlete. This profile will then identify potential and performance levels.
Critically evaluate personality profiling (postiive negative, opinion)
Positive - quick way of grouping individuals and identifying both similarities and differences.
Collection of data and information that might identify future problems of opportunities.
Build up data on teams and gear training around the profile.
Highlight any issues that could be addressed.
Bad - could lead to incorrect assumptions
methods of data collection don’t reflect the sports situation ie. a questionaire cant predict sports performance
Doesn’t take into account fitness, skills etc
Issues with validity and reliability
