Q

What are the components of an attitude (triadic model)? Give an example how each might be seen.

A
  1. Cognitive - our ‘beliefs’ about the attitude object. eg. I believe that exercise is good for me.
  2. Affective - our ‘feelings’ about the attitude object eg. I like/love/hate/enjoy exercising.

The above combine to produce….

  1. Behavioural - our actions towards the attitude object eg. I train 3 times a week.

Q

What is cognitive dissonance?

A

Where there are 2 opposing beliefs that cause imbalance or doubt in the attitude

eg.
belief 1 - I believe that fitness training is beneficial
belief 2 - I believe that fitness training doesn’t make much difference in sports performance

This dissonance would need to be solved if a positive behaviour towards fitness training is to occur.
