Attitudes Flashcards
To describe the nature of attitudes, the triadic model
What is an attitude?
A predisposition to act in a certain way towards an attitude object.
What is an attitude object?
Anything that an attitude could be directed towards - a person, a concept, a sport, a colour, a piece of fruit, exercise etc etc etc
Where do our attitudes come from?
Our parents, significant people in our lives, our experiences, our success/failure, enjoyment
Socialisation: adopting the norms, cultures and attitudes of our environment (the people around us)
What are the components of an attitude (triadic model)? Give an example how each might be seen.
- Cognitive - our ‘beliefs’ about the attitude object. eg. I believe that exercise is good for me.
- Affective - our ‘feelings’ about the attitude object eg. I like/love/hate/enjoy exercising.
The above combine to produce….
- Behavioural - our actions towards the attitude object eg. I train 3 times a week.
What is cognitive dissonance?
Where there are 2 opposing beliefs that cause imbalance or doubt in the attitude
eg.
belief 1 - I believe that fitness training is beneficial
belief 2 - I believe that fitness training doesn’t make much difference in sports performance
This dissonance would need to be solved if a positive behaviour towards fitness training is to occur.
Identify 5 ways that ‘cognitive dissonance’ could be resolved to ensure positive attitudes towards BAHL?
Showing evidence of benefits of BAHL
Show problems that might occur if no BAHL (dysfunctional behaviour, illness, obesity, smoking illness etc)
Persuasive communication - (Persuader, Recipient, Message, Situation)
Highlight what a good attitude looks like
Show examples of role models that have adopted BAHL
Use role model or significant other to deliver the message
How might the affective component be used to positively change an attitude?
Praise - satisfier - rewards - Positive reinforcement (like)
Make the activity enjoyable
Make sure targets are achievable giving satisfaction when they are achieved.
Make sure benefits and progress is identified
Punish those who demonstrate negative attitudes
Remove those who demonstrate negative attitudes
