Three Personality Theories
Trait theory
Social Learning Theory
Interactionist Theory
explain trait theory
- Personality represents those characteristics of a person that account for consistent patterns of their behaviour
- born with stable consistent enduring traits
-e.g extrovert will be loud
explain Social Learning Theory
Personality changes with the situation and the environment influences behaviour
Explains behaviour in terms of reaction to specific situations
We learn to deal with situations by observing others or by observing the results of our behaviour on others
And by modelling our behaviour on what we have seen
Socialisation:
Sport has a socialising effect
Participation in sport establishes norms and values of our society
primary - family
secondary - school
observe –> identify –> reinforced –> copy
explain the interactionist approach theory
Interactionist Approach is a mixture of trait & social learning theory. B=f(pe), behaviour is a function of personality & environment.
- suggests behaviour is a function or personality and environment
what are the three hollander approaches to the interactionist theory
The core of the performer= stable+solid, values and beliefs of individual
2 Typical responses use inherent traits displayed to specific situations.
3 Role Related Behaviour= performer may adopt/adapt very specific role when situation demands.
Define Credulous Approach.
Believe the theories. Accept link personality can predict behaviour.
Define the Sceptical Approach
Don’t the theories. Doubt link personality can predict behaviour.
How can a coach use the Hollander Approach to improve training for a performer?
Coach predicts potential unacceptable or aggressive behaviour +remove from situation to prevent potential red card.
-Identify situations cause inappropriate actions and create similar situations in training.
-Change player behaviour by encouraging players to adapt to specific circumstances.
Define vicarious learning.
or observational learning, occurs when a person is motivated to learn by watching someone else work and be rewarded.
Define socialisation.
Developing personality traits by associating and learning from others
What are the negatives of the Trait theory
Changed personality within different situations.
