Met Gandhi durin NCM, played key role in popularising Gandhi’s ideas of H-M unity and untouchabilty in Tamil Nadu by setting up Ashrams.
He was involved in Vaikom satyagraha against untouchability.
Led CDM in Tamil Nadu
As premier of Madras presidency, brought a law in 1939 allowing temple entry for Dalits.

At the time of partition, he was Gov general of Bengal. He acted as last GG of India when lord Mountbatten was absent.
He was conferred Bharat Ratna in 1955.
In 1959, he helped found Swatantra party by resigning from INC
