Personal Life Perspective Flashcards
why does the PLP think all other theories are out of date
- they assume nuclear families are dominant even though theres family diversity today
- they argue that people have no choice when creating relationships and family types
how does this perspective try to understand family life today
they look at the meanings individuals hold and how these meaning affect the choices they make on the type of family they create
they argue that family ties can b define through relationships that go beyond blood/marriage therefore, all relationships people think are significant and gives them a sense of belonging must be considered as family.
for example, Tipper says kids often see their pets as family
fictive kin
close friends that are seen as family
NORDQVIST AND SMART
researched families who had kids using donor egg/sperm and found that the parents who were raising the child emphasised social bonds over genetic links in determining family.
NORDQVIST AND SMART CRITICISM
although the research shows the importance of the meanings individuals attach to relationships, they ignore the special aspects of relationships that are based on blood/marriage
