What is Personal Jurisdiction?
Power over the Parties
Authority of a court to hear and decide a case involving a particular defendant
What limits the courts exercise of Personal Jurisdiction?
- 5th Amendment: Limits the Federal Government
- 14th Amendment: Limits the States, makes sure that party has minimum contacts to state
What is General Personal Jurisdiction?
The power to adjudicate any claim over the defendants who are present or domiciled within the court’s territory

What is Specific Personal Jurisdiction?
The power to adjudicate claims related to a defendant’s contacts with the court’s territory over defendant’s who:
1. Consent to Jurisdiction OR
2. Engage in forum directed acts such as:
a. Where you consented to be (work)
b. Specific contact that the person has within the jurisdiction (minimum contacts)
