Personal Investigation 2 Flashcards
Aim of PI2
To find out whether time spent on social media per day effects whether beauty standards are accepted as the norm
Experimental hypothesis
The more hours spent on social media per day the more likely that beauty standards are accepted as the norm
Null hypothesis
The amount of hours spent on social media per day will have no effect on whether beauty standards are accepted as the norm any difference will be due to chance
Independent variable
Time spent on social media per day
Dependant variable
Whether beauty standards have become the norm
2 confounding variables
- The content/apps they use e.g insta vs Twitter and the people you follow
- The individuals perception on beauty standards
2 extraneous variables
- Time of year interview was conducted- summer months influencers will be wearing less clothes, promoting a ‘beach body’
- Age- whilest are target population was 16-60 most Ps were aged between 16-21, older generations may not use social media as much as younger generations
Methodology
Structures interview- all questions decided in advance all Ps asked same questions in same order to ensure validity and allows for quantitative and qualitative data. However, there may be interviewer bias by the way questions are asked, could emphasise certain words communicate expectations, Ps may feel less comfortable verbally communicating answers rather than writing in a questionnaire
Experimental design
Independent groups- no individual has data in more than one cell; data is independent
Sample
Opportunity sample of friends and family ages 16-60 this is more cost effective and less time consuming than random. However there is a chance of bias, cannot he generalised
Graphical representation
Bar chart- nominal data presented in catagories
Experimental design
Independent measures ( each P does not have more than one score in each cell)
Statistical test
Chi squared test, appropriate because it’s looking for a difference, design was independent groups and data was nominal
3 findings
- 28 people say beauty standards have become the norm
- 19 people spent 1-3 hours on social media per day
- Instagram was the most popular form of social media with 19 people choosing it
Reliablitity Assessing and Implementation
- Inter-rater each interviewee goes through same process and instructions
- Correlate findings from each interview to ensure they all produce similar results. The judgements of each interviewer compared to resolve any disagreements
