Personal Investigation 1 - Content Analysis of Antisocial Behaviour Flashcards
PI1
Content Analysis Definition
An observational study in which behaviour is observed indirectly in written or verbal materials such as interviews, conversations, books, tv, etc.
PI1
Past Research
Robinson & Bachman: ‘Relationship of TV viewing to violence and aggressive behaviour’
-Observed correlation between aggressive behaviour in children and antisocial behaviour present in media
PI1
Aim
To find out how prevalent antisocial behaviour is throughout media across different age ratings
PI1
Independent Variable
The age rating of the content
OP: 18 or PG
PI1
Dependant Variable
The amount of antisocial behaviour
Measuring using predetermined coding scheme
OP: Behaviour which causes / is likely to cause harm or distress upon another person
PI1
Hypothesis
Directional, Experimental: Televised media with age ratings above 18 will include more antisocial behaviour than media with a PG rating
PI1
Null Hypothesis
There will be no difference in the amount of antisocial behaviour present in media with the 18 and PG age ratings
PI1
Confounding Variable
Amount of time observing each content (different time obs PG to 18)
Eliminate: 1 Hour Observation of each content
PI1
Extraneous Variables
Research bias
Counteract: Coding scheme based off met. gov. official def of antisocial beh.
Situational: poor environment limiting researcher’s observational abilities
Counteract: Environment = free of distractions / controlled lighting & temperature
PI1
Methodology Justification
Method of analysing aspects of the media
PI1
Methodology Strengths
- Ability to analyse a wide range of material
- Ethically Sound
- Qualitative & Quantitative Data available
PI1
Methodology Weaknesses
- Research = limited to my hypothesis (coding scheme)
- My analysis may be subjective
PI1
Sampling Method & :) + :(
OPPORTUNITY SAMPLING
:) - Most practical
:( - Bias & subjective in available material (Netflix used = limits content not streamed on Netflix)
PI1
Descriptive Statistics & Justification
MEAN: More sensitive than other methods (Incorporates all tallied data) & More practical than SD
PI1
