3 Key mechanisms for health promotion
- Self-care
- Mutual Aid
- Healthy Environment
Self Care
The overall condition of the body or mind and the presence or absence of illness or injury determined or influenced by factors beyond the individual’s control (e.g., age, genetics, care received)
Mutual Aid
facilitating actions people take to help each other
Healthy Environment
facilitating actions people take to help each other
Primary Care
Actions that can be taken previous to and in prevention of health problems
Secondary Care

The Process of Self-Assessment
Purpose of the assessment is to establish where on the health continuum the individual is on determined indicators of health
Macrolevel Processes
Environmental influences such as social support
Systems theory
The approach to understanding health and illness being adopted to address how the variables (Biological, social, psychological and spiritual) interact
5 levels of the ecological systems theory (with example)
- Individual (age, sex, health)
- Microsystem (Family, school peers)
- Mesosystem
Microlevel processes
Cellular disorders and chemical imbalances
Social Ecological Framework
understanding the multifaceted and interactive effects of personal and environmental factors that determine behaviors.
Social Cognitive Theory
Behaviour is influenced by a reciprocal, triadic, and dynamic relationship between personal factors, environmental factors and the behavior itself.
Personal Factors (Social Cognitive Theory)
outcome expectancies, self-efficacy beliefs (developed through mastery experiences, social modelling and personal identification with the model, positive physical and emotional states, encouragement and verbal persuasion), moral competence
Environment Factors (Social Cognitive Theory)
both external & internal
- physical environment
- social environment
- situation (individual’s perception of environment)
Self-efficacy
belief that one can and will succeed because they have the necessary skills/capabilities to do so; trust in those capabilities
Theory of Reasoned Action
Behaviours result from intentions
Theory of Planned Behaviour
Intentions to act are result of attitude, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control
social determinants of health
income and social status; social support networks; education; employment/working conditions; social environments; physical environments; personal health practices and coping skills; healthy child development; gender; and culture of an individual
