Personal Development Flashcards
some researchers define this as the challenging stimuli or things that happen to people
STRESS
the subjective experience of distress in response to percieved environmental problems (Kring, Davidson, Neale & Johnson)
STRESS
characterized by Feelings of tension, Frustration, worry, sadness, and widthdrawal
STRESS
Are mental problems that arise From coping with difficulties by turning against oneself
INTERNALIZING DISORDERS / DIFFICULTIES
Are Frustrations and disappointments acted out in agressive behaviors against others
EXTERNALIZING BEHAVIORS
Is the kind of stress that is helpful in promoting ones growth and development
EUSTRESS
Bad stress that may include negative changes in behavior
DISTRESS
Is the way people try to deal with problem including the problem of handling the typically negative emotions stress produces
COPING
The two broad dimensions of Coping
Problem-Focused Coping & Emotion-focused Coping
This means dealing with the actual problem posed by a stressful situation
Problem-Focused Coping
Is a more subjective Coping style as it considers the difficulties challenging the feeling state of the individual, and as such aims to comfort and soothe the stressed person.
Emotion-focused Coping
Happens when one would rather ignore the stressors or fantasize being in a different, non-stressful circumstance either of which does not solve the issue or truly being about true relaxation.
Avoidance Coping
The four lobes of the Human Brain are?
Frontal, Temporal, Parietal, and Occipital Lobe
the lobe of the brain where the primary motor area is located, controls voluntary movement in a contralateral manner, and is also responsible for higher thought processes and decision-making
Frontal Lobe
Contains the primary auditory area
Temporal Lobe
Contains the primary somatosensory area, which processes the sensory signals such as touch, pressure, pain, thermal sense, and kinesthesia
Parietal Lobe
The location of the primary visual area that receives visual signals from the thalamus and processes visual sensations
Occipital Lobe
The brain is divided into two ________, the left and the right.
Hemispheres
The two hemispheres of the brain communicate with each other through the ______ _________, which serves as a bridge between the two hemispheres.
Corpus Callosum
This theory, fueled by the split-brain research of Roger Sperry, suggests that learning styles and information processing of the left and right brain are different.
Brain Dominance Theory
Based on the brain dominance theory, individuals whose ____ brain is more dominant prefer analysis and inductive reasoning, and learned in steps.
Left
Based on the brain dominance theory, individuals whose _____ brain is more dominant prefer global thinking and deductive reasoning, and learned better by understanding the broad concept before focusing on details.
Right
Is based on the notion that the entire brain is active during mental (cognitive) processing, and there is interaction among various parts during mental processes such as perception and memory.
The Whole Brain Theory
Is described as a technique where ideas branch from a central image.
Mind Mapping
A visual tool that facilitates learning and memory by using cortical skills such as words, images, number, logic, rhythm, color, and spatial awareness.
Mind Mapping
Is defined (in adolescence) as “the achievement of expected developmental milestones and the establishment of effective coping skills, secure attachments, and positive social relationships” (Friedrich, Mendez & Mihalas, 2010).
Mental Health
To be _______ ________, adolescents need to have a positive quality of life, free of psychopathy or mental illness, and are able to function well at home, school, and in their communities.
Mentally Healthy
