Incarnation
Literally means ‘in flesh’ – a central teaching of Christianity that God became flesh as a human being in the person of Jesus Christ.
Christology
The area of Christian theology about the nature of Jesus Christ’s relationship with God
Docetism
Jesus only ‘appeared’ or ‘seemed’ to be fully human; this was so that god could communicate with humans.
Christ-event
Jesus’ birth, ministry, death and resurrection. The significance of Jesus is not in one event but in the whole of his life and its relationship with history both before and after
Son of God
The term used by Jesus’ followers to describe his special relationship with God
Liberator
Controversial view of Jesus as a political freedom fighter and/or as one who sided with the poor and marginalized against the rich in society
Form of Life
Refers to the historical, sociological, moral and psychological conditions in which ordinary language operates and has meaning
Torah
The Jewish law and teaching originally believed to have been given to Moses c1250BCE. Contains the first five books of the Christian Bible
Sermon on the Mount
Jesus’ longest discourse on ethics containing range of religious and moral issues; found in Matthew 5-7
Samaritans
A group of Jews living between Judea (south) and Galilee (north Isreal) – seen as racially and religiously impure due to inter-marriage with foreigners; had their own temples
Zealots
First century religious group, often using violence with the aim of ending the Roman occupation of Palestine.
Exegesis
Close analysis and interpretation of a text
