Client-centered therapy operates according to three basic principles that reflect the attitude of the therapist to the client:

- Set clear boundaries
- The client knows best
- Acts as a sounding board
- Don’t be judgemental
- Don’t make decisions for them
- Concentrate on what they are saying
- Be genuine
- Accept negative emotions
- How you speak can be more important than what you say
- I may not be the best person to help
