Person-centered Therapy Flashcards
Rogers Spearheaded the development of
personal-growth and encounter groups.
Person-Centered therapy is
a humanistic therapy
A significant disagreement between existential and humanistic thought
involves the idea of an innate self-actualizing drive; humanistic thought states that it exists
Rogers consistently emphasizes a
faith in the capacity of individuals to develop in a constructive manner
Characteristics of the person-centered approach include:
- An emphasis on the subjective (phenomenal) world of the client 2. An emphasis on learning in therapy derived from ongoing research 3. An emphasis on the attitudes and beliefs of the therapist 4. An emphasis on the personal relationship between the client and the therapist
To be self-actualized is to
welcome uncertainty, be able to have deep meaningful relationships, not have artificial dichotomies with ones self, and be spontaneous and creative.
Person-centered therapy is best described as
a set of tentative principles describing how the therapy process develops
The role of the therapist is that of
the facilitator
The most important function of the therapist is to be
willing to be real in the relationship with the client
Accurate psychological diagnosis
is not necessary and more often than
not may interfere with effective therapy by diminishing the therapist’s ability to fully understand the client
Most important characteristic of therapist?
genuineness
Accurate Empathic Understanding:
Therapists strive to understand
clients’ experience and feelings (or the client’s subjective experience) sensitively and accurately as they are revealed in the moment-to-moment interaction during the therapy
session
Function of therapist reflection:
encourage and enable clients to become more reflective themselves by mirroring the clients emotional experience
Empathy helps clients:
1) pay attention and value their experiences; 2) see earlier experiences in new ways; 3) modify their perceptions of themselves, others, and the world; and 4) increase their confidence in making choices and in pursuing a course of action
Roger’s theory has
reached more then 30 countries and goes into personal growth, family therapy, education, political, and communication arenas
