Cyrus the Great
King of Persia and founder of the Persian empire (600-529 BC).
Satrapy
One of the 20 provinces in which Darius divided the Persian Empire.
Farsi
Language spoken in the Persian empire derived from Farsia, the central region of the Iranian Plateau.
Zoroastrianism
Persian religion founded by Zoroaster; taught that humans had the freedom to choose between right and wrong, and that goodness would triumph in the end.
Ahura Mazda
God of Zoroastrianism, meaning “Lord of Wisdom” the supreme deity the power of good the creator of the world, the guardian of humankind.
Darius the Great
king of Persia who expanded the empire and invaded Greece but was defeated at the Battle of Marathon (550-486 BC).

An ancient city that was the capital of the ancient Persian Empire constructed under Darius.

First capital of Persian empire, built by Cyrus the Great.

The second major Persian empire, which was in power between 247 BCE and 224 CE.

The last pre-Islamic Persian empire
