Permissive Working Flashcards
What is permissive working?
Allowing a train to be SIGNALLED to enter a section or platform that is already occupied by another train
Where might permissive working be authorised?
In certain station platforms, depots, or sidings as specified in local instructions
Can a train enter an occupied platform under permissive working without signaller permission?
No – it must be authorised and the driver must proceed at caution
What is the key driver rule when moving under permissive working?
Proceed at caution and be able to stop short of any obstruction
Is permissive working allowed everywhere?
No – only where it is specifically authorised by local instructions or the signaller
When might permissive working be used outside normal operations?
To assist a failed train or during special shunting moves
Can permissive working be used at a main aspect signal without it clearing?
Yes, but only if the signaller authorises the movement and local rules allow it
What must a driver do if permissive working is in force?
Understand the movement, ensure the route is correctly set, and proceed with extreme caution
Does permissive working override the need for a clear route?
No – the route must still be properly set and confirmed safe before entry
Is permissive working the same as shunting into an occupied siding?
They are similar in that both allow movement onto an occupied line, but permissive working is a formal, rule-based system for that purpose
