Peritoneum Review Flashcards
Peritoneum?
A serous membrane lining the peritoneal cavity, a space within the abdominopelvic cavity
Parietal peritoneum?
Lines the inner surface of the body wall
Visceral peritoneum?
Covers enclosed organs
What is found in between the parietal and visceral peritoneum?
A small amount of fluid
What does the peritoneum allow organs to do?
It allows organs to slide past one another without damage.
Mesenteries?
Double sheet of peritoneal membrane that connect the parietal and visceral peritoneum. They provide a route for blood vessels, nerves and lymphatic vessels
What does the peritoneum produce?
It continuously produced peritoneal fluid to lubricate the surfaces.
What can occur with the peritoneal fluid with liver disease, kidney disease and heart failure?
The peritoneal fluid can accumulate resulting in abdominal swelling (ascites), and distort internal organs (causing heartburn, indigestion, and lower back pain)
