peristalsis Flashcards
1
Q
what is the definition of peristalsis?
A
it is the rhythmic wave-like contractions of the muscles to mix and propel the contents of the alimentary canal
2
Q
how does peristalsis occur?
A
when the circular muscles contract, the longtitudinal muscles relax, and the wall of the gut constricts. food is pushed forward. when the circular muscles relax, and the longtitudinal muscles contract, the wall of the gut dilates and this widens the lumen for food to pass though. this results in churning of food
