liver Flashcards
what is the hepatic portal vein
veins that deliver nutrient rich blood to the liver form by blood capillaries
what is the hepatic artery
it is a blood vessel that supplies oxygenated blood from the heart to the liver
what is the hepatic vein
it is a vein that carries the blood received from the hepatic portal vein away from the liver and to the heart
where does excess glucose go in the body
excess glucose is returned to the liver and stored as glycogen
what are amino acids used for in the body?
they are used for the synthesis of new protoplasm for growth and repair of worn out parts of the body. they are also used for the synthesis of enzyme and peptide hormones
where does excess amino acids go to in the body
they are deaminated by the liver to form urea which are excreted by the kidneys as urine
where do excess fats go to in the body
excess fats are stored in adipose tissues under the skin surface and around the heart and kidneys. this protecrs organs from mechanical shock
what are the functions of the liver
- regulation of blood glucose concentration
- fat digestion
- metabolism of amino acids and formation of urea
- break down of alcohol
- break down of hormones
- break down of old red blood cells
