Periradicular surgery Flashcards
1
Q
What are the aims of Peri-radicular surgery?
A
- Achieve apical seal
- Remove existing infection (via curettage or excision of apex)
2
Q
What are the indications for Peri-radicular surgery? 5 failures of endo
A
- Obstruction to instrumentation i.e. broken instrument
- Root filler error or problem i.e underfilled
- Miscellaneous i.e.e lateral root canals
- Pathology i.e. apical cyst
- Post Crown teeth with endo failure
- Lateral perforation
3
Q
What is the Apicectomy technique?
A
- LA
- Raise a flap accoridng to flap design (semilunar or traingular)
- Prep root end using ultrasonic or rotary bur
- Place retrograde root filling
- Close flap
4
Q
What are the ideal retrograde root filling materials?
A
- Amalgam
- ZOE
- MTA (mineral trioxide aggregate)
5
Q
Causes of failure of peri-radicular surgery?
A
- Inadequate seal
- Inadequate support (to much apex removed)
- Miscellanous (poor healign response)
