What are 2 clinical characteristics of veins?
High capacitance vessels with thin walls
One way valves
Dilated veins <1mm diameter that show a red color under the skin.
Telangiectasia
Dilated veins 1-3mm that show a blue color under the skin.
Reticular Veins
Dilated superficial leg veins that are >3mm
Varicose Veins
What is lipodermatosclerosis?
Localized chronic inflammation and fibrosis of skin and subcutaneous tissue
Sometimes associated with scarring or contracture of Achilles tendon
What is the composition of venous thrombosis?
Initially: fibrin and platelets
Later: RBCs and fibrin
What is Virchow’s Triad?
- Stasis of blood flow
- Vascular Damage
- Hypercoagulable State
Treatment for superficial thrombophlebitis.
ASA or other NSAIDs for pain
-benign condition that does not lead to pulmonary embolism
What is Treatment for DVT?
Anticoagulant therapy:
If caused by reversible or time limited event (driving long distance) then used for 3 months
If caused by genetics or family Hx, then used indefinitely
