Peripheral nervous system Flashcards
What is the PNS composed of?
Nerves (cranial and spinal) and ganglia outside the brain and spinal cord
What are dermatomes and myotomes?
Dermatomes - An area of skin innervated by a single spinal nerve
Myotome - A group of muscles innervated by a single spinal nerve
What are peripheral nerves arranged in?
Fasiculi
What connective tissue is present in spinal nerves?
External vascular layer - EPINEURIUM
Individual fasicles covered in PERINEURIUM
Individual axons covered in ENDONEURIUM
What are the 2 classification systems for peripheral nerves?
One based on conduciton velocity - Using letters A, B & C (A being the fastest)
One based on axonal diameter - Using roman numerals I-IV (I having the largest diameter)
What are the two classifications of the source of a stimulus?
External - Extroceptors
Internal - Proprioceptors & Enteroceptors
What is a neuromuscular junction?
A specialised synapse between a motor neuron adn a muscle fibre
