Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
What is the peripheral nervous system divided into
sensory(afferent) and motor(efferent), motor can be divided into autonomic and somatic, and autonomic being divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic
What are the groups of nerves in the PNS?
31 pairs of spinal nerves and 12 pairs of cranial nerves
Where do somatic afferent nerves convey information from?
skin, skeletal muscle and joints
Where do somatic efferent nerves convey information to?
skeletal muscle
What is a dermatome?
An area of skin that is supplied by a single spinal nerve?
What is an area of skin that is supplied by a single spinal nerve called?
A dermatome
What is a myotome?
A group of muscles innervated at a single spinal nerve
What is a group of muscles innervated at a single spinal nerve called?
A myotome
What is parenthesia?
Abnormal sensory feeling/sensation due to nerve damage
What is anaesthesia?
No sensory feeling/sensation due to nerve damage/anaesthesia
Visceral efferent nerves can be divided into?
sympathetic and parasympathetic
What do sympathetic efferent nerves innervate?
Viscera(organs) and periphery(vasculature and sweat glands)
What do peripheral efferent nerves innervate?
Only viscera(organs)
What is a ganglion?
collection of cell bodies outside the CNS
What is a nucleus?
A collection of cell bodies inside the CNS
What is a plexus?
A network of interconnecting nerves
Where do afferent fibres have their cell bodies?
spinal ganglia
Where do all efferent nerve synapses lie?
peripheral ganglion
What are fasciculi?
Bundle of peripheral nerves
What are nociceptors?
Pain receptors, not to be confused with pain
How can we classify sensory receptors?
Whether they detect external or internal information and by class of stimulus
What do Golgi tendon organs detect?
Tension in tendons
What do joint receptors detect?
Start and end of movement
Where are joint receptors found?
Joint capsules
What type of receptors are muscle spindles, Golgi tendon organs and joint receptors?
Proprioceptors
What is a motor unit?
A single lower motor neurone and all of the muscle fibres it innervates
What are external receptors called and what are examples of stimuli they receive
Exteroceptors, eg pain, temp and pressure
What can we divide internal sensory receptors into ,giving examples of each
Proprioceptors (eg movement and joint position) and interceptors (eg blood ph and gut movement)
What types of receptors are there if these are divided by mode of detection?
chemoreceptors, photoreceptors, thermorecepotrs, mechanoreceptors, nociceptors, baroreceptors…
What is bundle of nerves called?
Fasciclui
What is the connective tissue in fascicule organised into?
Epineurium (external vascular layer), perineurium (what individual fascicles are covered in) and endometrium (what individual axons are covered in)
