Peripheral Nerve Injury Flashcards
Wallerian Degeneration
Transection of nerve that results in degeneration of axon and myelin sheath distal to site of axonal interuption
In Wallerian Degeneration what happens to the endoneurium Sheath?
Sheath does not degenerate but forms tube direting regeneration
Segmental Demyelination
Axons preserved (no wallerian degeneration) Remyelination restores function
Example of Segmental Demyelination
GBS
Axonal Degeneration
Degeneration of axon cylinder and myelin
Progressing distal to proximal
How does axonal degeration progress?
Distal to proximal
Example of Axonal Degeneration?
Peripheral neuropathy
Polyneuropathy
Bilatearl Symmetrical involvement of peripheral nerves
Pattern of polyneuropathy
Distal earlier than proximal
RAdiculopathy
Involvement of nerve roots
3 levels of Traumatic Nerve Injury
Class 1: Neurapraxia
Class 2: Axonotmesis
Class 3: Neurotmesis
Neurapraxia (Class 1)
Injury to nerve that causes transient loss of function
May be rapidly reversed or persist a few weeks
Example of Class 1 Nerve Injury
Compression
Example of Class 2 Nerve Injury
Crush Injury
Axonotmesis (Class 2 Nerve Injury)
Injury to nerve interrupting the axon and causing loss of function and wallerian degeneration distal to the lesion
