Peripheral nerve, Diabetic neuropathy, radiculopathies Flashcards
What is the definition of a peripheral nerve injury?
A peripheral nerve injury refers to damage or disruption of the nerves that extend from the spinal cord and brain to the rest of the body, outside of the central nervous system. Peripheral nerves can be injured in a number of ways, such as trauma, compression, disease, or inflammation.
How do we classify peripheral nerve injuries?
Peripheral nerve injuries have been classified by several pathophysiological schemes that have clinical relevance in terms of the likelihood of recovery. A simplified scheme describes injuries as either open or closed; the former are more likely to require early exploration on the assumption that a sensory or motor deficit is the result of a nerve division.
