Peripheral Nerve Flashcards
Hand of Benediction sign
Median neuropathy; AIN injury can still make a fist
EMG normal in nerve injury for
2 weeks
PIN
Finger extension and ulnar wrist extension
NF 1 Criteria
- 6+ cafe au lait macules ( greater than 5mm pubertal pts or greater than 15mm post pubertal)
- 2 or more neurofibromas
- Freckling of axilla or inguinal region
- Optic glioma
- characteristic osseous lesion- sphenoid wind dysphasia or thinning of long bone cortex
- 2+ Lisch nodules
- Family member with NF 1
Need 2 of above
Worst prognosis for return of motor function
Ulnar
Femoral neuropathy
Hip flexion and knee extension weakness
L4-knee extension
L2-4 thigh adduction
L5-S2 knee flexion
Tarsal tunnel syndrome
Compression of the tibial nerve by the lancinate ligament on the medial surface of the ankle, posterior to the medial malleolus
Plantar foot pain that spares heal
How to tell ulnar compression at elbow vs wrist
Test ulnar sensation on the dorsal surface of the hand since the dorsal sensory branch of the ulnar nerve leaves 2-3 inches proximal to the wrist
Ulnar compression at wrist (Guyons canal)- does not affect dorsal hand sensation
Lateral antebrachial cutaneous is nerve is from
Musculocutaneous
Cord input for median n
Motor-medial cord
Sensation-lateral cord
Ulnar is medial for both
Common peroneal nerve
L4-S2
Nerve on the surface of the anterior scalene
Phrenic
Gilliatt-Sumner hand
Compression of the lower truck results in atrophy and weakness of the thenar muscles, mild weakness of the hypothenar, lumbrical, interossei muscles with hypesthesia in ulnar and medial antebrachial cutaneous nerve
Very proximal C5 nerve root injury
Dorsal scapular nerve to the Rhomboid
Nerve transfer for elbow flexion
Ulnar to musculocutaneous
