Perioperative Care Flashcards
what is the ambulation style for a patient that just underwent lumbar spinal fusion
- log rolling with the use of a transfer board. This ambulation has to be carried out by minimum 3 people.
what is the ambulation style for a patient with lower extremity amputation
trapeze
what is the ambulation style for a patient that underwent hip arthroplasty?
abduction pillow
what is the ambulation style for a patient that just underwent joint replacement
continuous passive motion
low fowler
15 - 30 degrees (a position great for resting)
semi fowler
30 - 45 degrees ( a position great for thoracic expansion to improve breathing and make feeding easier)
fowler
45 - 60 degrees (same function as semi fowler but here there is more thoracic expansion)
high fowler
60 - 90 degrees (prevents acid reflux, aspiration,
orthopneic position
a position where you are first upright then leaning forward in a way that gets your arms resting on your knees (this is a position useful for patients with asthma, COPD, pneumonia, better cough efficiency)
supine
this is a position where patient completely lays on their back (useful for when doing physical assessment, resting, during operation)
prone
this is a position where a patient lays on their stomach (useful for easy secretion drainage like vomiting, also help with preventing hip co traction as it is the only position that allows hips extension)
right lateral recumbent
here patient is laying on the right side (this side is useful when pressure is required on the right side of the body, it also useful for gastric emptying thus reducing acid reflux)
left lateral recumbent
here the patient is laying on the left side, thus putting pressure on the left side. It is also a beneficial position for pregnant women as this position allows blood flow to the placenta
Trendelenburg
this is a position where you lower extremity is raised higher than our upper extremity. This is a position that helps return blood to the heart (venous return), which is useful for a patient that is hypotensive
Reverse Trendelenburg
here the upper extremities are placed above the lower extremities. This position helps with gastric reflux (brings the food back down). It is also useful in gradually preparing patients that have been immobile for a long period of time for their first walk to avoid dizziness
Sims
also known as half-prone or semi prone. useful for pregnant women, best position for administering enema or suppository,
What are some nursing expectations for pre-op patients
- get consent
- put them on NPO
- hold anticoagulants
- assess allergies
What are some nursing expectations for post-op
- making sure vital signs are stable
- managing pain
- client education
