Witness and advocate for the pt if they don’t understand the procedure.
What factors make elderly at risk for surgery?
Kidneys and skin
What are risks associated with obesity and operation?
Fat is prone to infection because fatty tissue is high in blood and fluid content.
Heart—> extra work to push fluids
Why eould it matter if a family member has history of issues with surgery?
Pt could have same reaction, esp for malignant hypothermia. Need to be prepped for that before surgery in order to prevent.
What are things to consider and educate the pt on the day before surgery?
NPO status, bowel prep, skin prep, meds, lab draw, medical clearance, special post op classes
What are some meds a pt can take the day of surgery? One Major one to avoid?
Bp meds in morning with tiny sip of h2o is okay. Insulin is not, need to eat with it.
What’s a key part of assessment documentation prior to surgery?
Integumentary, be very detailed
Education on surgery day should include specifics about pain like? What about activity?
You will have pain post op! Teach how to use ambulatory devices prior to surgery bc anesthesia!!
What are the roles of the prep nurse?
Obtain hx and lab data, physical assessment, vitals, proper attire, start IV access, medicate if applicable, SIGNED CONSENT and EDUCATION.
What intraoperative team member is responsible for the pass and cleaning of instruments?
The scrub nurse
What intraoperative team member is in charge of room and environment?
Circulating nurse
What intraoperative team member is in charge of monitoring the pt at the head of the bed
Anesthiologist or RN with specialty degree
What is the point of calling a TIme Out?
Right pt, rt site, procedure, position, check allergies, ECG.
