Periodontium Flashcards
What is periodontium
hard/soft tissues which support the tooth in relation to alveolar bone
Structures associated with periodontium
- Alveolar bone
- PDL
- Cementum
- Tooth gingiva
In health patients can you see the cementum?
no, it is not visible
where is cementum thickest and thinnest
Thickest at apex
Thinnest at CEJ
Avascular/Vascular?
Avascular; no innervation
How long does it form?
throughout life
Color of cementum
dull/pale yellow
Texture when felt with instrument
grainy
what % mineralized
65%
How does cementum develop histologically?
develops from dental sac and forms on root after disintegration of Hertwigs epithelial root sheath
What do the undifferentiated cells of the dental sac do?
they contact newly formed dentin and are induced to cementoblasts which create a matricxthat turns it into cementocytes which then matures into cementum
Microscopic appearances of Cementum
- Sharpey’s fibers
- PDL
- Cementocytes: entrapped cementoblasts
- CEJ: three junctional patterns–overlap, gap, meet
- Cemental repair: apposition from cementoblasts in adjacent PDL
- Types of cementum
What are the two types of cementum and characteristics
- Acellular: forms slowly, can’t change width, and no cementocytes
- Cellular: forms rapidly, can change width, and embedded cementocytes
3 characteristics of alveolar bone
- easily remodeled
- vascular
- 60% mineralized
