Periodontics Flashcards
The prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues
Periodontics
Supporting structure of a tooth, supports the teeth in alveolar bone
Periodontium
Periodontium consists of what
Cementum, alveolar bone, periodontal ligaments
Pale pink or salmon colour. The colours is depending on an individuals pigmentation. Firm and resistant and tightly adapted to the tooth and bone
Healthy gingival
Leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Infectious disease process.
Periodontal disease
Dental plaque aka biofilm- is the ______ of gingival inflammation and most other forms of periodontal disease
Main cause
Provides a surface to which plaque can attach
Calculus (tartar)
Calculus found above the margin of the gingiva
Subragingival
Calculus on root surfaces below the gingival margin that can extend into periodontal pockets
Subgingival
Causes inflammation that affects the gums
Gingivitis
Damages the bone and connective tissue that supports the teeth
Periodontitis
Inflammation of gingiva with plaque present at the gingival margin
Plaque induced gingivitis
Signs of ____ redness, tissues bleed easily, tenderness, slight swelling, probing depth less than 4mm, no bone loss or gingival recession
Gingivitis
Signs of _______ bad breathe, bleeding red swelled gums, pus, detachment of gum from teeth, mobile teeth, mouth pain, blunt papillae
Periodontal disease
Indications for periodontal treatment
Conditions that can’t be eliminated by oral hygiene, nutrition or preventative program, resorption of bone and perio tissue
Contraindications for periodontal treatment
Poor general or metal health, poor prognosis for healing, bone loss is to extensive or too much infection
What is a PSR
Periodontal screening and recording
How is a PSR done
Divided into 6 sextant and while each tooth examined there is only one code recorded per sextant
Normal space between free gingiva and tooth. Portion which is not attached to the tooth. 1-3mm deep
Sulcus
The sulcus deepened because of disease 4mm and deeper
Code 0 in probing
Absent
Code 1 probing
Bleeding
Code 2 probing
Calculus
Code 3 probing
Deep pockets
Code 4 probing
Everything
Less than 30% mouth affected by disease
Localized
More than 30% disease in the mouth
Generalized
1-2mm loss of attachment is what severity
Slight or early
Up to 4mm loss of attachment is what severity
Moderate
More than 5mm loss of attachment is what severity
Severe or advanced
