What is a periodontal file?
A periodontal instrument used to PREPARE calculus deposits before removal with another instrument.
What are the 3 uses for the periodontal file?
- Roughen burnished calculus.
- Crush tenacious calculus
- Remove Overhangs
What are some of the limitations of the periodontal file?
- Only supplemental instruments.
- Limited to the enamel surface or outer surface of the calculus.
- Do not adapt well to curved root surfaces.
What are some specific design characteristics of the periodontal file?
- Series of cutting edges
- Cutting edges are at a 90-105 degree angle to the base.
- The working end is round or rectangular.
- The back is rounded for sub gingival use
- Rigid Shank
- Area-specific use
What are some types of periodontal files?
Hirschfeld 3/7, 5/11, 9/10
Orban 10/11, 12/13
What surfaces is the Hirschfeld 3/7, and Orban 10/11 used for?
Facial and lingual surfaces of posterior teeth.
What surfaces is the Hirschfeld 9/10 used for?
Facial and lingual surfaces of anterior teeth.
What surfaces is the Hirschfeld 5/11 and Orban 12/13 used for?
Mesial and distal surfaces of the posterior teeth.
When sharpening a periodontal file what materials do you need and what are they used for?
- A Clean vise to hold the instrument.
2. File sharpener (Tang file) to sharpen
How do you hold the tang file?
Round end in your dominant hand and the other in non-dominant hand.
In what direction to you slide the tang file when sharpening the perio file?
Right to left, pick up and repeat 3-6 times 3 is best.
How do you sterilize the tang file?
Wipe down with birex and alcohol the autocalve on its OWN.
How do you sterilize the periodontal file?
Dip in peroxide after and the clean and sterilize like all other instruments.
