Periodisation Flashcards
what is periodisation?
•the organisation of training into blocks or phases so that an optimal physiological and psychological peak can be reached.
how does periodisation work?
- the coach will split a performers year into different sections
- each section will be split into smaller sections providing specific detail as to what training will be covered
what are the levels of details in periodisation?
- macrocycle
- mesocycle
- microcycle
what is the macrocycle?
- based on LONG term goals
* lasting for 1-4 years
what are the macrocycle phases called?
- preparation phase
- competition phase
- transition phase
what is the preparation phase? (the macrocycle)
- general conditioning
* competition-specific preparation
what is the competition phase? (the macrocycle)
•competition maintenance
•tapering
>enables us to be ready for competition
what is the transition phase? (the macrocycle)
•recovery, rest and recharge.
what is the mesocycle?
- based on MEDIUM term goals within the macrocycle
- usually 1-3 months
- may have a component of fitness as the focus, e.g. developing strength prior to the competition phase
what is the microcycle?
- based on SHORT term goals within the mesocycle.
- usually lasts a few weeks
- involves a number of training sessions of different volumes and intensities
what is tapering and peaking?
•tapering describes the manipulation of training volume and intensity to promote peak performance during competition
what does tapering and peaking involve?
- a decrease in training volume
* maintaining training at competition intensity
what does the coach do in tapering and peaking?
•organise the training schedule so that the athlete peaks at a point after training-induced fatigue, but before reversibility takes place
How long is a taper and when does it take place?
- 1-2 weeks
* prior to a competition
