Periodicity Flashcards
Whatis periodicity
The trends in a periodic tabke
What are in the ffg groups: Group 1 Group 2 Group 3-12 Group 17 Group 18
1 alkali metals 2 alkali earth metals 3-12 transition elemnets 17 halogens 18 noble gases
What is the atomic radius
Distance from centre of atom to outermost shell
Why does electron affinity increase across a period
Protons increase in the nucleus resulting in a more positive charge, atomic radius decreases therefore there is a stronger electrostatic force of attraction for the bond pair
Why does ionization energy increase across a period
Atomic radius decrease which cause electrons to be closer to the nucleus resulting in a greater electrostatic force requiring more energy to be used to remove electrons
Why does electronegativity decrease down a group
Atomic radius increases resulting in electrons being further from the nucleus and the spaces between the electrons amid the nucleus to increase this means that there is a weaker pull and the electronegativity decreases
Why does ionization energy decrease down a group
The atomic radius increases resulting in the spaces between the nucleus and electrons to increase therefore the electrostatic force of attraction is weaker and less energy is required to remove and electron
