periodic table review Flashcards
what are element symbols used for
to represent the names of different elements
what are the horizontal rows called
periods
what are the vertical rows called
groups
how many periods are there
7
how many groups are there
18
where are metals found
metals are found in the left side of the periodic table
where are metalloids found
metalloids are found in a staircase patters to the right between metals and non-metals
what is group 1 known as
alkali metals (have low melting points, are soft and very reactive.)
what is group 2 known as
alkaline earth metals (are relatively soft and reactive.)
what are group 3-13 known as
transition metals(Many can form coloured compounds and some are magnetic. The only metals not silver in colour are copper (Cu) and gold (Au).)
where does metals get more reactive
Metals become more reactive moving down a group and to the left of the periodic table.
facts about non-metals
18 non-metals
makes most of the earths crust and atmosphere and all living organisms
what is group 17 known as
halogens
what is group 18 known as
noble gases (not reactive, since full valence shell)
facts about metalloids
a small boundary between metals and non-metals
has metals and non-metals features
