Periodic Table And Separation Techniques Flashcards
Why is copper sulphate not found in the periodic tsble ?
Copper sulphate is a compound, not an element.
What is an alloy
A micyure of elements
Why can bronze not rust but steel does
The elements in steel, iron and carbon, the iron when comes into contact with air, starts to rust because iron rusts but bronze wich has tin, copper and zinc, are elements that dont rust.
The formula for a substance is MgS. What is the name of this substance
Magnesium Sulfide
What is an elememt in the periodic table which is gas at room temp and in which the atoms are joined togetyer in molecules
Oxygen
Lithium + water =?
Lithium hydroxide+ hydrogen gas
Why in chromatography, we use pencils instead of ink.
If you use ink for the pencil kine, the ink would dissolve along with the water which travels up the filyer paper and with the other coloured inkw, which ruins the experiment.
A person uses water as a solvent in Paper chromatography with a set of pens. It did not work. Then thus person used ethanol instead of water. It worked. Why?.
This is because the inks originally used for these set of pems are not soluble towards water but are solubee towards ethanol.
Water at 15 degress enters the condenser where cold water goes in. What is the trekp when the water leaves at the ‘water out condenser’
Double of when it came in. 30 degrees.
Give two ways in which the watee vapour changes as it passes down the glass tube in the condenser
It loses heat energy
Condenses from the gaseous to liquid phase.
In which refion of the Periodic table are very reactive metals?
Region 1
In which regions of the Periodic table are Non metals (such as oxygen and chlorine)
Region3
Give two statements which describe Noble gases
They have very low melting points and boiling points
All non metals
Which processes occur during distillation
Evaporation then Condensation
Give the name of the colourless liquid that is collected in the test tube (in distillation)
Water
