Periodic Table and atomic structure Flashcards
What is a group?
A column that runs vertically.
What is a period?
A row which runs horizontally.
Where do you find the non-metals?
To the right hand side of the ‘stairs’.
Where do you find the metals?
To the left hand side of the ‘stairs’.
The 4 main groups in the periodic table are…..
Group 1: Alkali metals.
Group 2: Alkali earth metals.
Group 7: The halogens.
Group 8: The noble gases.
The 3 subatomic particles that make up an atom?
Protons, neutrons and electrons.
Describe a proton.
Positive charge, found in the nucleus and has a mass of one.
Describe a neutron.
No charge, found in the nucleus and has a mass of one.
Describe an electron.
Negative charge, found outside the nucleus in the shells and has no mass.
How are electrons arranged?
First shell fits 2 electrons and the rest fit 8 electrons. They fill singly 1st (North, South, East then West) then double up.
What makes up the mass number?
The protons and neutrons added together.
35
Cl How many protons, neutrons and electrons
17 are in this atom?
Protons = 17 Electrons = 17 Neutrons = 18
27
Al How many proton, neutrons and electrons
13 are in this atom?
Protons = 13 Electrons = 13 Neutrons = 14
