12
Q

What is the trend in group 1 and group 7 to the boiling point and melting point

A

As you go down group 1 the boiling point and melting point decreases
As you go down group 7 the boiling point and melting point increases
When the metals are melted, the metallic bond is weakened for the atoms to move more freely. The bonds are broken completely when the boiling point is reached.

16
Q

Which groups are pretty reactive in the periodic table?

A

1 / 2 / 7

17
Q

Which group is extremely unreactive?

A
Group 0 ( noble gases)
No chemical reaction takes place
18
Q

In group 1 metals get more reactive as you go

A

Down the group

Rb will explode with water!

19
Q

Non metals in group 7 react less reactive as you go ..

A

Down the group

20
Q

Which metal in group 1 has the highest melting and boiling point and why?

A

Lithium has high melting and boiling point due to its small size

21
Q

Metal oxides chemical and physical properties are

A

Alkaline solutions
High melting points
All solids

22
Q

Non metal oxides properties are

A

Acidic solutions
Low melting points
Can be gases

23
Q

pH - values below 7 are

A

Acidic

Remember pH 7 is neutral

24
Q

pH above 7 are

A

Alkaline

Remember pH7 is neutral

25
Q

In what order did Mendeleev place the elements in the original periodic table?

A

In the order of the RELATIVE MASSES of their atoms
Note relative means comparing it to hydrogen which has a mass of 1

In the modern periodic table, elements are arranged by increasing atomic number. Mendeleev arranged the elements into rows in order of increasing mass.

26
Q

What would be the pH for chlorine oxide if added to water?

A

Chlorine oxide is a non metal therefore is acidic. When mixed with water pH7, the pH would be lower than 7 as you are mixing it with an acidic solution.

27
Q

What groups are in the reactive metals

A

Group 1/2

Note group 7 - non metals are also quite reactive

28
Q

Which group is extremely unreactive

A

Group 0

29
Q

What is the trend for reactivity in group 1 and group 7

A

As you go down, the metals get MORE reactive
Li - reacts with water it fizzes
Rubidium reacts with water it explodes

As you go down the halogens, the reactivity Decreases down the group

30
Q

Describe trends in physical and chemical properties in the periodic table

A

Physical - Melting and boiling points
Chemical - Reactivity
Solubility of compounds
