Periodic Table Flashcards
Definition of an element
The simplest form of a substance. It only has one type of atom
What is the smallest part of an element called?
Atom
How many different elements are there?
118
Definition of a compound
2 or more elements chemically bonded (together)
Definition of a mixture
A mix of elements and compound not chemically bonded
Examples of material properties
Metals —> heat and electric conductor
Non-metals —> diatomic (covalent)
Why do scientists use models to represent atoms?
Atoms are too small to see. An element when drawn, the particles are the same size, colour and shape, not touching
When do you write -ide in a compound
When it is a compound, containing 2 elements
When do you use -are in a compound
When there’s a hidden oxygen
What are the columns of elements called?
Groups
What are the rows of elements called?
Periods
Why is the periodic table organised in groups
So they are organised in reactivity and properties.
What are the names and location of different groups in the periodic table?
1- Alkali metals
2- Alkali Earth
7- Halogens
8- Noble Gases
Hydrogen properties
Gas, flammable, diatomic, non metal
Carbon properties
Solid, non metal, flammable (fuel)
Oxygen properties
Gas, flammable, diatomic, non metal
Nitrogen properties
Gas, non metal, diatomic, little flammable
Properties of noble gases
Colourless, odourless, tasteless, non-flammable gases under standard conditions
How are Noble gases arranged in the Periodic Table?
According to their boiling point (up +powerful)
Properties of Halogens
High electronegatives
Highly reactive, specially with alkali earth and alkali metals
Toxic and potentially lethal
Test for oxygen
Relight a glowing splint
Test for Carbon Dioxide
Lime water turns milky
Test for hydrogen
Squeaky pop noise test
