Periodic Table Flashcards
Where is the atomic number located and what does it represent?
It’s located on top of the symbol. It represents the number of protons and electrons, and it’s always the smallest number.
Where is the mass number located and what does it represent?
It’s located below the symbol, it’s the weight of the atom’s nucleus and it’s always the biggest number.
How do we figure the neutrons of the element?
M - A = N (Mass number - Atomic number = Neutrons)
What is electron configuration?
The number of electrons in each shell. the first shell is always 2, while the rest can have up to 8 electrons.
What does the period number represent?
The amount of electron shells.
What does the group number represent?
The number of valence electrons.
What is the first general word equation?
Acid + metal > salt + hydrogen gas
What is the second general word equation?
Acid + base > salt + water
What is the third general word equation?
Acid + metal carbonate > salt + water + carbon dioxide
What is the fourth general word equation?
Acid + metal oxide > salt + water
Define valence shell.
The outermost shell of an atom.
