Periodic Table Flashcards
Periodic table
an arrangement of elements in periods and groups and in order of increasing proton number/atomic number
What is the similarities between the electronic configuration of elements in the same group
They have the same number of electrons in their outer shell
What is the trend going down a metal’s group
More reactive as it is easier to lose electrons, bcus the attraction between protons and electrons is weaker
What is the trend going down a non-metal’s group
They are less reactive as it is harder for the protons to attract electrons as the atomic radius increases
What are the group one metals described as and what are their trends going down the group
They’re called the alkali metals
- relatively soft
- decreasing melting point
- increasing density
- increasing reactivity with water
What are the group 7 metals described as and what are their trends going down the group
They’re called the halogens
- diatomic non-metals
- increasing density
- decreasing reactivity
What is the appearance of halogens at room and pressure
Chlorine - pale yellow green - gas
Bromine - red brown - liquid
Iodine - grey black - solid
Explain the displacement reactions of halogens with other halide ions
The more reactive halogen displaces the less reactive one and the solution turns into the colour of the displaced halogen
Transition metals properties
- have high densities
- have high melting points
- form coloured compounds
- often act as catalysts as elements and in compounds
What are group 8 elements called and what are their prosperities
They’re called noble gases
- unreactive
- monoatomic gases
