Treaty of Guadalupe Hildago
ends Mexican-American war, we get the Rio Grande and a TON of territory
Compromise of 1850
California is a free state, slave trade ended in DC, and Mexican Session was given popular sovereignty
Bleeding Kansas
People moved to Kansas to vote for who they wanted, caused a lot of conflict
Dred Scott Decision
Supreme Court ruled that black Americans were not citizens and that congress does not have the power to stop slavery, meaning Missouri Compromise was unconstitutional
John Brown’s Raid
attempt to free slaves (not successful), makes the south see the north as violent
South Carolina Secedes
because they wanted to keep slavery
Emancipation Proclamation
frees the slaves in the rebelling territories, Lincoln has made the war about slavery (partly because England and France stop trade with the South now), and black people now run north to join the union army
Impeachment of Johnson
not actually impeached, but close by one vote, it was because he violated the tenure of office act
13th, 14th, and 15th amendment

Hayes is president but… (1) Federal support of reconstruction was extracted from the south, (2) support of building transcontinental railroad through the south, (3) appointed a Southerner to the presidents cabinet, and (4) limited enforcement of racial equality
