A

1854 - Repealed the Missouri compromise and allowed slavery North of the 36 30 line based off popular sovereignty

Charles Sumner

A

1856 - Got beat up with a cane after he gave a speech criticizing the expansion of slavery. Start of violence over the issue of slavery

Cuba

A

1856 - The United States tried to acquire Cuba, thinking it would be at least one slave state (there were slaves there)

  • They didn’t want to anger the Brits and French, so they met with them and told them their plans
  • Word got out and the North went nuts so the plan died, but enforced the lack of trust between the North and the South

Dred-Scott Decision

A

1857 - big win for the South, Dred-Scott was a slave that sued for his freedom in the North

  • Supreme Court ruled that Black men cannot sue for freedom because they are not citizens
  • Also ruled that congress can not limit slavery in Northern territories because of the fifth amendment right to property

LeCompton Constitution

A

1857 - Pro-Slavery forces in Kansas created a sham-constitution and sent it to Washington hoping for it to be approved. Douglas realized it was a sham and stopped it from happening
