Compromise of 1850
- allowed CA in as free state
- popular sovereignty in land gained from Mexican Cession
- strengthened fugitive slave laws
Kansas-Nebraska Act 1854
Overturned MO Compromise, instituted popular sovereignty in Kansas and Nebraska –> bleeding Kansas
broke up Whig party, which then formed Republican party
