period 3 Flashcards
why is sodium more reactive than magnesium?
-sodium takes less energy to lose 1 electron than to lose 2, so more energy is needed to for Mg to react
give observations for when sodium reacts with water:
-vigorously with cold water
-molten ball on surface
-fizzing
-produces h2 gas
-strongly alkanline
whats the ph of sodium when reacting with water?
-12-14
observattions when magnesium reacts with water
-very slow with cold water
-weakly alkaline solution
-thin coating of magensium hyroxide on the surface of metal
-few hydroxide ions formed
-not very soluble
why does magnesium react faster with steam?
-as it has high temp so more energy
which element, when reacting with oxygen, combusts?
-phosphorus
which element, when reacting with oxygen, burns?
-sulfur
which elements have the highest melting point/
-na, mg, al as they have giant ionic lattices, have strong forces of attraction
which elements have the lowest melting point?
-phsphorus and sulfur as they have simple molecular structures weak IMF vander walls
why is mg MP higher than Na?
-mg forms 2+ ions so bonds more strongly
