Perio Maintenance FAQs Flashcards

1
Q

Why do I need a perio maintenance cleaning?

A

The patient needs a periodontal maintenance cleaning because once periodontal disease is diagnosed it never goes away. Perio Maintenance is crucial because it prevents the disease from worsening and causing additional health conditions for the patient’s oral and systemic health.

Q

What is the difference between a perio maintenance cleaning and a general cleaning?

A

The difference is that during the perio maintenance, the periodontist goes below the gum line and deep into the pockets, and removes any plaque and bacteria build up that has occurred since the last visit.

A general cleaning allows the general dentist to check/prevent decay in the mouth. The GD is also checking for cavities, toothaches, and possible infections.

The patient should remain on a routine schedule keeping up with their cleanings because if not, it can cause major build-up and other health issues.

Q

How often do I need to come in for my perio maintenance?

A

You should come in every 3-4 months for periodontal maintenance. The DR. will examine the health of the gum tissue by probing the depth of the gingival pockets and will probably get X-Rays to check the health of the supporting bone. For any areas in the mouth that are uneven, the Doctor will smooth them out to discourage any additional bacteria from attaching. Rotating every 3-4 months throughout the year between the G.Dentist and Perio, will ensure you keep your gums stable.
