Periglacial landscapes Flashcards
What are 3 pereglacial processes?
1) frost heave
2) ice lensing
3) solifluction
What is frost heave?
moisture in soil freezes, it expands and the ground shifts up
What is ice lensing?
Moisture under stones freezes and expands and pushes the stone upwards
What is solifluction?
Frost heave on a slope, when it thaws it goes diagnology down
What are two pereglcaial land forms/ features and what are they?
1) Patterned ground= number of small scale features, that are a result of frost heave (stones that have reached the surface)
2) Pingos=Round ice-cored hills
What are the two types of pingos?
1) Open system= forms in valley bottoms where water from surrounding slopes collects, freezes and expands
2) Closed systems= developed beneath lake beds. Groundwater beneath a lake is trapped by the permafrost
