Glacial processes Flashcards
What is mass movement?
Downslope transportation of materials under gravity
What is erosion?
The wearing away of rocks and other material by a moving force
What is weathering?
Breakdown of rocks that are exposed to weather
What is transportation?
Movement of materials by kinetic energy
What is freeze thaw?
Water gets in cracks, freezes and expands
What is frost shattering?
Low temps, water in rocks freeze and expands
What is hydrolysis?
Chemical reaction producing clay
What is hydration?
Water molecules added to rock minerals to create new minerals of a large volume. Causes surface flaking
What is plucking?
Meltwater seeps into rocks of valley floor, as glacier advances it pulls bits of rock with it
What is abrasion?
As glacier moves it scours surface, wearing rocks away
What is nivation?
Ice growing into a rock, then when glacier moves its taken with it
