Periglacial Flashcards
What is continuous permafrost?
It’s found in the coldest region
There is hardly any melting here
What is discontious permafrost?
Occurs in regions that are warmer
The ground isn’t frozen to such great depths
Small vegetation can grow here
What is sporadic permafrost?
Found in areas where temps are around/below freezing
Only in areas where the climate is cold enough to prevent thawing
Vegetation can grow here
What is talik?
Unfrozen soil and rock
What is solifluction? (Mass movement)
When temps in the summer rise and melts a large amounts of ice. The water can’t drain way due to the impermaeble layer of still frozen ground. Water reduces friction between soil particles.
On slopes with a 2°, the saturated layer can move downslope
