Hazards Flashcards
What are convection currents ?
Heat comes from the core. As it rises, it will cool and sink again.
This drives the plates apart
What is the disaster response curve?
Shows how a place recovers from a hazard
Will they return to normality?
What is the tectonic fit?
Fragments of an old fold mountain were found in many countries
Caledonian fold mountain belt is found in Greenland,Canada,Ireland and England
What is glacial deposits?
Permo Carboniferous glaciation are found in Antarctica, Africa, India and South America
More evidence comes from glaciation striations- scratches on the bedrock made by blocks of rocks embedded in the ice as the glacier moves
What is the jigsaw fit?
The coastline of eastern South America and West Africa are very similar
What is the geological fit ?
The geology of eastern South America and West Africa was mapped and it revealed rock outcrops over 2,000 million years old
What is a natural hazard?
A perceived event that threatens both life and property
What is fatalism ? (Response to a natural hazard)
They think people can’t influence or shape the outcome so they won’t put any measures in place
What is adaptation?(response)
Some people might land use zoning or weight lifted houses
What are secondary impacts/effects?
Long term effects e.g. people living in tents after an event (like Hattie)
What are primary impacts/effects?
Immediate effects e.g. buildings falling down
What is interrogated risk management?
Deciding on the actions to be taken to minimise damage
What is the beni off zone?
The moment melting occurs
Describe the disaster response curve
Stage 1: modifying cause and event
Stage 2: Hazardous event
Stage 3: Search, rescue and care
Stage 4:Relief and rehablitation period (modify the loss e.g. aid, temp housing )
Stage 5: Nature of recovery
The need to reduce vulnerability/the need to restore normality
